Landscaping Supplies FAQ

Most custom jobs run 4 to 8 weeks from approved drawings to your driveway. Bigger commissions and intricate cut-work sit at the longer end. We give you the real lead time when we quote — not the optimistic one — so it can lock into your install schedule or build timeline.

It depends on the look you want and where the piece will live! Corten steel is designed to weather naturally, developing a beautiful, protective rust-like patina over time that looks incredibly striking in landscapes and rustic settings. Powder-coated aluminium offers a sleek, modern finish available in various colors. It is lightweight, completely rust-proof, and excellent for coastal properties or matching specific business brand colors. We can help you decide which is best for your specific project.

Both. About half our work is variations on existing designs (different sizes, different patterns, different finishes). The other half is fully custom from a sketch, a Pinterest screenshot, or a few words on a napkin. If it’s metal and it goes outside, we’ve almost certainly built something close before. Please get in contact with us via our contact page, phone (02 4229 2222) or email (info@ironbarkmetaldesign.com).

No — that’s most enquiries. Send a photo, a rough idea, a board of references, or just a few sentences. Adam or one of the team comes back with options, suggestions and pricing. We’ve been doing this since 2014 and can read between the lines.

It costs more than Bunnings, less than most people assume custom Aussie-made metalwork costs. Garden edging starts at $35. Letterboxes start at $820. Fire pits $550–$2,000. Custom commissions vary with size and complexity. We quote properly so you can compare apples to apples — no surprises at delivery.

It’s the same weathering steel used on bridges and freight containers — the rust on the outside literally seals the steel underneath, then stops eating in. Our 2 – 6mm gauge is structural thickness, not decorative sheet. Pieces we made in 2014 are still on properties today looking better than the day they left. The patina takes 6 – 18 months to fully develop, then the piece is essentially permanent.

For those who live locally to Wollongong NSW, we offer a free pick-up option direct from our workshop. Otherwise, choosing to have your goods delivered to the closest depot as opposed to directly to your home can save substantially on shipping costs.

For those who own their own business, it is sometimes cheaper to have your product delivered to a commercial address.

PLEASE NOTE: If on a pallet, unloading facilities (ie: a forklift) must also be available at the business address. Please feel free to contact us for a shipping quote to your business.

Yes to both. Trade clients get pricing that lets you actually mark it up, plus shop drawings and product photography for your client proposals. And we don’t sell behind your back — once you’re the supplier of record on a job, the client relationship is yours, not ours.

We don’t — we fabricate, you (or your landscaper) install. Everything’s built to go in cleanly: edging ships with joiners and stakes, planters and screens are ready to position, fire pits and letterboxes drop straight in. For the bigger gear — large sculptures, custom pergolas, retaining systems — we supply full drawings, fixing details and finishing guidance so your installer knows exactly what to do. We make the Corten steel; you (or your crew) fit it.

If you don’t install it right, yes. During the initial weathering process, Corten will bleed run-off. As a professional, you need to account for this. We recommend installing it with a setback, using gravel borders, or sealing the metal once the desired patina is reached. We build the steel; you build the landscape.
