Corten Steel Planters Cut to the Millimetre — Welded to Outlast the Project

Most metal planters are 1mm sheet steel that bulge the day you fill it and rusts out from under the paint — or plastic that fades and cracks by its second summer. Our planters are 3–6mm solid metal, fully welded in Berkeley NSW. Choose genuine Corten steel and the rust is the finish, it seals itself and looks better every year. Or choose powder-coated aluminium: lightweight, any colour, no patina.

Garden Planters FAQ

It costs more than a flat-pack import, less than people assume custom-welded Aussie steel costs. Price scales with size and thickness — a small feature planter is a very different number to a 2.4-metre commercial bed. We quote the whole job properly, steel and freight, so you’re comparing apples with apples and there’s no surprise at delivery.

It’s the same steel used on bridges and shipping containers — the surface rusts once, seals the metal underneath, then stops eating in. Our 3–6mm gauge is structural thickness, not decorative sheet, and every planter is fully welded rather than folded and bolted. Pieces we made in 2014 are still in gardens today, looking better than the day they left. (And if you got here searching “rusty planter boxes” — yes, that’s exactly what these are. Done properly.)

It rusts, then seals — that’s the point. While the patina forms over the first few weeks it can bleed a little colour, so on paving or decking we’ll spec a base, a tray or a small setback so run-off never becomes your problem. And if staining is a hard no — a white deck, a rooftop terrace — we build the identical planter in powder-coated aluminium instead. We’ll tell you exactly what suits your spot when we quote.

Yes. The patina is stable iron oxide — no paint, no galvanised coating, no timber treatment breaking down into your soil. Corten steel raised garden beds are in veggie patches and community gardens all over the country, including plenty we’ve built. If you want extra separation you can line it, but the steel doesn’t need it to survive.

Your call — that’s the point of custom. Raised garden beds usually go open-bottomed straight onto soil so they drain naturally. Planters headed for paving, decks or balconies get a welded base with drainage holes, set up for the surface underneath — and add a folded top lip if you want that clean finished edge. Just tell us where it’s going in the form.

Yes — round corten steel planters are one of our most-requested builds, and we roll curves, semi-circles and tapered profiles in-house. If it’s genuinely odd — star-shaped, multi-joined, wrapping a column — send a sketch and we’ll draw it up before anything is cut.

Empty, most residential sizes are a two-person lift; full of soil, they’re not going anywhere — which is exactly what you want in wind and around kids and dogs. Pick the final position before you fill it, or add wheels — that’s an option too. For balconies and rooftops where weight matters, we build the same designs in powder-coated aluminium at a fraction of the weight.

We deliver Australia-wide through a courier, insured and packed properly. Freight to your exact postcode is built into your quote, so there’s no nasty surprise at checkout. Exceptionally large builds ship as modular sections for straightforward on-site assembly. Or pick up free from our Berkeley (NSW) workshop.

Most planters run 2 to 3 weeks from approved drawing to your door — bigger or intricate builds sit at the longer end. We give you the real lead time when we quote, not the optimistic one, so it locks into your landscaping or build schedule.

Yes to both. Trade clients get pricing you can actually mark up, plus shop drawings for client sign-off and consistent quality across multi-unit orders. Flag that you’re trade when you enquire and we’ll set you up.

It’s free and no-obligation. Adam or one of the team comes back within one business day with options, sizing advice and a real price. No pressure, no spam, no on-selling your details.

That’s most enquiries. Send a photo of the space, a rough idea, or a Pinterest screenshot and we’ll come back with sizes and pricing to react to. We’ve been doing this since 2014 and can read between the lines — the “not sure” options in the form are there for a reason.
